The #Atari 1200XL was a 8bit #homecomputer running a #MOS 6502 #CPU at 1.79 MHz. When this beautiful machine was launched in 1983 with 64Kb RAM the price was under thousand dollars, but... https://youtu.be/JyA5tA5mmYY

$omehow, in the #8bitwar the #C64 was much more popular even when specs been almost the same. The difference in #BASIC language was less significant for the success. Most likely that competition was won by #Commodore because Jack Tramiel took the advice of his grandfather so serious.

#SEGA did very few computers. The #SegaSC3000 was based on their first crappy console, but actually had one of the best #BASIC around. Then I realized the #SegaMarkIII , which has excellent graphics, could still be extended as a computer with the SK1100 extension and the only compatible version of the basic. I was able to create a 2 ways basic source to wave tape format converter, and find the trick to inject #z80 cross assembler binaries through basic. So, basically, i have a computer version of the #SegaSMS but with 60hz display. Also with #katakana keyboard and charset , for which i did a utf8 converter. #retrogeek #retrocomputing

A productive afternoon/evening in the #8bit world. Switched from coding natively on the #mega65 to setting up a cross platform development environment for #basic.

Then back to creating more #medieval #runes as a character set. Half way done but I need to revisit some. It's hard to make them accurate with blocks and few options for multiple diagonal lines.

Been rather fun writing hexadecimal letters in runes.

Bruce Hoyt and his son Ben Hoyt join the podcast to discuss 70's-era home computing including the MOS KIM-1, The Ohio Scientific Superboard II, and the Ferguson Big Board CP/M machine, #BASIC, assembly language, and #Forth. Bruce's Pentominos solution has been used to test and benchmark Forth systems. #retrocomputing #6502 #z-80
