France's government has abandoned its climate plans

With planning on environmental projects at a standstill since 2023, France's political leaders are only reinforcing the idea that they are unable to think long-term, even when it comes to such crucial issues as climate change & biodiversity collapse

Le Monde · France's government has abandoned its climate plansBy Le Monde

"The earth has reached its first catastrophic tipping point linked to greenhouse gas emissions, with warm water coral reefs now facing a long-term decline and risking the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people, according to a new report.

The report from scientists and conservationists warns the world is also “on the brink” of reaching other tipping points, including the dieback of the Amazon, the collapse of major ocean currents and the loss of ice sheets.

But some experts have questioned the report’s claims about the fate of coral reefs, with one saying while they are in decline there is evidence they could remain viable at higher temperatures than suggested.

Tipping points are recognised by scientists as moments when a major ecosystem reaches a point where severe degradation is inevitable.

The world’s coral reefs are home to about a quarter of all marine species but are considered one of the most vulnerable systems to global heating."

The Guardian · Planet’s first catastrophic climate tipping point reached, report says, with coral reefs facing ‘widespread dieback’By Graham Readfearn

New research looked at 213 heat waves around the world from 2000 to 2023. No surprise: Heatwaves became more likely and more severe during that period, largely due to the burning of fossil fuels. Of those events, up to a quarter of them would have been impossible without pollution from 14 "carbon majors" — fossil fuel and cement producers including ExxonMobil, Chevron, and the former Soviet Union. @CNN reports on the possible legal implications of this. “Courts are indicating a willingness to hold carbon majors accountable, but at the same time asking for more scientific certainty, and our study helps to close a part of that gap,” said Corina Heri, a study coauthor and law professor at Tilburg Law School in Zurich.

Now the #globalWarming and human-made #climateChange denialists will say: 'Look, nature also emits so much #CO2, we humans are not the problem!'

Yes, there are natural sources of CO2: Mofettes, volcanos, fumaroles, hydrothermal vents, smokers, etc.

BUT: We humans emit *two orders of magnitude* (100 times) MORE than all of those combined¹. 😮

Natural sources are a baseline we can't change. Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are a question of technology and political will.

In July 1943, dark, smoky clouds suddenly descended over Los Angeles. The waves of pollution called “smog” — a combination of “smoke” and “fog” — continued and the cause remained a mystery.

This film follows the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air Act, which have had an enduring effect on the quality of air Americans breathe. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming

The federal policy — which requires hybrids and EVs to make up 20 per cent of sales in 2026 and 100 per cent by 2035 — will save Canada more than $90 billion and 11,000 premature deaths over the next 25 years, according to analysis by The Atmospheric Fund, a Toronto-based non-profit focused on climate change and air pollution

Canada's National Observer · An EV sales mandate is good public health policy, analysis shows“While the EV availability standard has been communicated from the beginning as a climate policy, we think it's equally, if not more compelling as a health policy,” said Bryan Purcell, the vice-president of policy and programs for The Atmospheric Fund.
