While @Leighton was driving, we both witnessed from #Melbourne a fireball meteor on January 28. Due to being on the road, we didn't have good enough direction info to make a report. I recall I looked at my watch and it was 2057 local time (AEDT), during local twilight. But apparently enough people had info to report and AMS eventually posted it. It had to be one of the longest-lasting meteors I've seen. fireball.amsmeteors.org/member #asteroid #meteor #fireball #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks #Australia

Star Of The Hero, Nicholas Roerich

picked this because it's a clear cold night here and I really like this artist. It's not as complex, it's simple. There's nothing extra, but nothing is missing.

I imagine that the figure witnesses the shooting star, they're awake and present. That they have an internal clarity.

I searched "star of the hero" and found this painting, so I guess the title doesn't refer to something else. Are heroes falling stars? 🤔

Meteorite caught on doorbell camera in Canada.

"Mrs. Laura Kelly and her partner found a star-shaped pattern of gray dust on their walkway after coming home from an evening walk, in the community of Marshfield, on the east side of Charlottetown. Not knowing what it was at first, they brushed and rinsed it from the walkway. After reviewing security camera footage (see below), they realized that the material might be meteoritic, and recovered approximately 7 g of fragmented material from the grass adjacent to the walkway...."

How to catch the Geminids, one of the strongest meteor showers of the year.

@AssociatedPress reports: "The shower often produces meteors with a distinctly more yellow glow, likely due to the unusual origin material, said Sally Brummel, planetarium manager at the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum."

To all #astronomy lovers,

The Leonid #meteor shower peaks this weekend, best viewed after midnight until dawn. They will radiate from the constellation Leo, but can appear anywhere! The moon might outshine some of the faint ones.

The #Leonids are caused by Earth passing through debris left behind by Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. It orbits the Sun every ~33 years, leaving a trail of dust and particles. When the particles enter our atmosphere, they burn up and create bright streaks in the sky.
