Stephen Brooks 🦆<p>Beam dynamics in <a href="https://mstdn.io/tags/accelerators" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accelerators</span></a> usually assumes your bunch has a finite temperature. But what if your bunch has zero temperature? This is the case for transporting ultra-low emittance bunches (Coulomb crystals) from ion traps. The usual "beta functions" don't really work, so I developed equations for the 3D fully-coupled dynamics in the note below. I'm hoping it can be used to do stability analysis (in 21 parameter space, so many ways it can go unstable!) <a href="https://mstdn.io/tags/physics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>physics</span></a></p><p><a href="https://stephenbrooks.org/ap/report/2025-9/model_order1_analytic.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">stephenbrooks.org/ap/report/20</span><span class="invisible">25-9/model_order1_analytic.pdf</span></a></p>

This video shows hadron beams of different energies being transmitted through the same string of nine permanent magnets, which is a prototype 22.5° section of a fixed-field hadron therapy accelerator.

Cameras 1 and 2 point at fluorescent screens upstream of the magnets and cameras 3 and 4 show the beam coming out.

OK, so the results from my very unscientific #NobelPrize in #Physics topic poll are in, and the winner is … Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (or “AMO”, as it’s short-handed). Hot on the heels of AMO is Astrophysics and Cosmology. Particle Physics was the hands-down least-favoured topic.

So, let’s go one more step and see what the #fediverse thinks are its favourite **discoveries** that might attract the prize. Let’s stick to AMO and Astro/Cosmo, since those are the preferred areas.
