For this evening viewing pleasure at my local dinner theatre (TV in the TV den): The Streets of San Francisco (1972-1977)

For me, one of the best actors ever, one of the stars of this 1970s TV series: Karl Malden.

I simply love Karl's acting style, chops, spunk. He's really good in everything I've ever seen him in.

A new definition for planet was presented at the IAU General Assembly earlier this month -

A planet is a celestial body that
1. orbits one or more stars, brown dwarfs or stellar remnants and
2. is more massive than 10^23 kg and
3. is less massive than 13 Jupiter masses (2.5 X 10^28 kg).

The new definition will allow exoplanets to be referred to as planets.

But, Pluto will still fail to gain planetary status since its mass is only 1.31 x 10^22 kg.

18 years ago on August 24, 2006, Pluto was demoted in status from Planet to Dwarf Planet, as the International Astronomical Union (IAU) revised the criteria for a full-sized planet:

A planet was defined as a celestial body that
1. is in orbit around the Sun.
2. has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape).
3. has “cleared the neighborhood” around its orbit.

Pluto fails to meet the 3rd criterion.

The jumping dot is #pluto moving against the backdrop of distant stars as it slowly chugs its way around the Sun.

has to do a bunch of hand-wringing work that is not a part of the model they are discussing in order to exclude all the binary planets in our solar system. They artificially call out the Earth-Moon and Pluto-Charon systems as being not quite applicable, even though the model and its mechanism actually apply directly to them, and nothing about the model actually use the IAU definition.

…Which is because there is no scientific reason behind that definition and using it only confuses actual research.
