On a more positive note this morning;

Slow Ways whose volunteers have been mapping 10,000 miles of walks in an act of 'citizen geography' now have made their walking guide available online.

The website allows you to assess the suitability of walks for your abilities & constraints.

As we struggle to deal with the hell of AI, and toxicity of social media, its good to see what real people working together with technology can achieve!

Another weekend, another hike. This time was up on the hills & moor tops around Dove Stone Reservoir, beyond Oldham way out at the very eastern edge of Greater Manchester.

Lots of fascinating gritstone rock formations and fortunately it's been very dry recently as otherwise the trail over the moors would have gone through some extremely boggy sections.

According to the GPX track we did about 16km in total, with a total climb of 613m (highest elevation 551m).

A new year a renewed #introduction

I am Dude, associated with the movie but there the comparison ends.

An updated #Introduction for 2025:

I’m a dad, #cat whisperer, #computer nerd, occasional #gamer, and #movie lover. I’m a #quality minded #professional and I make my own #homebrew beer. #freebsd. Enthousiast I love #fitness #walking #programming in #python and #3Dprinting. Busy with #homeassistant and more.
Ik spreek voornamelijk Nederlands, Engels een beetje Duits.

Fine, a belated #introduction. Still searching for my people here. Encountering too many memes. I like levity in my timeline, but seldom like that. Where are the shitposters? The wise-crackers? The dry wits?

Interested in #film / #movies, #books (working on a project to get everything on my shelves read), #blogging, #vlogging, #birding, and #walking (boring).

Raised in #Iowa, live in #Chicago. Would love to find other folks here, but also interested in those in far-flung locales.

As I messed up my instance while trying to migrate it, here's yet another introduction.
I'm Simon, one of those greybeards they tell you about. Husband, Dad, musician, career internet wrangler living in West Yorkshire in the UK. I keep my daughter in tomato ketchup by fixing people's systems, primarily Linux and open source (surprise surprise). For fun, I make music with a small pile of synths I've accrued, and last year I started letting people hear it more, including having tracks on the last Bonkwave compilation. When I'm not doing all that, I sort of dabble in stuff. Cooking - my wife and I are trying veganism with about 95% success, walking in our area - it's handy living on the edge of a moor, and taking photos but not really that seriously. Dw in'd dysgu Cymraeg, ond maen'n rhaid i mi wneud mwy na Duolingo. #introduction #linux #music #synths #bonkwave #vegan #cooking #walking #dysgucymraeg

A meta-analysis demonstrates a significant inverse association between daily step count and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular (CV) mortality with more the better over the cut-off point of 3867 steps/day for all-cause mortality and only 2337 steps for CV mortality.

Anyone feel like going for a really long walk at the moment? Here's @outside's story on extended strolls through beautiful landscapes, on proper pathways or moderate terrain so you don't face the same physical challenges as a hike. Bonus: writer Megan Michelson has recommended spots all over the world, including New York City, Glasgow, Shikoku in Japan, and Barra de Parismina in Costa Rica.

#Introduction (2)

Support #WomensRugby (#HarlequinsWomen and the #RedRoses), and - for my sins - #Pompey and #England #Football.

Love #BoardGames (#Carcassonne, #QuacksOfQuedlinberg, #TicketToRide) and #Wargaming (#BloodBowl, #MoonStone, #Oathmark, #BurrowsAndBadgers).

Trying to get back into #Running after an achilles injury and love a long #Walk or two. #Walking usually involves a #Pub since I love my #Beer and #RealAle.

Looking forward to interacting with you lovely folks in 2025.
