@itnewsbot What's with the weird license on #Umbrel? I also notice that they use phrases that make it sound like it's #opensource, without ever actually saying that it is (presumably because the weird license means it isn't). Eg. "Built in the open. We're on Github." Obviously they're using a lot of open source parts like #Debian and #Docker, but Umbrel itself doesn't seem like a #FOSS community project.
@Blort @itnewsbot I think I heard it's VC backed
This blog post by them goes into a bit of detail what the license entails

In my opinion it’s not a bad license, just because it’s not endorsed by the #osi don’t by default mean it’s malicious
@lil5 @Blort @itnewsbot I strongly agree with them that #freedom and openness are spectrums, although that will obviously offend all the pro-binary black-white thinkers at the #OSI who consider anything non-OSD-compliant to be “proprietary”.
It's also ridiculous that we as #software developers apparently need other people at all who think for us and who dictate who or what aligns with freedom and openness and who or what doesn't.
Please do read this issue before considering to install #umbrel
No #https support

@Blort @itnewsbot @pixelcode @linuxlads
From what I’ve read: https wasn’t “needed” for the cryptocurrency stuff as that didn’t require an open port to the outside world
With the recent marketing from #umbrel #LinuxUnplugged and others to advertise as a general purpose #selfhost solution they might want to reconsider
This “hard problem” has already been solved by the #caddy project it can do selfsigned CAs and letsencrypt
@lil5 @itnewsbot @pixelcode @linuxlads
Well, yes. I use #Yunohost, and that automatically installs a self signed cert without the user having to do anything, and then a #LetsEncrypt cert (with auto renewals) with just a single click.
They're running entirely on community donations.
