GenAI and what it does to the brain.

Truly excellent "long read" article about genAI and what it does to those who come to rely on it. Well researched, with insightful quotes from thoughtful people.

Good science/tech journalism used to be like that, but on AI topics this has become rare. So much easier for the salaried writer of a mainstream paper just to follow the hype.

The author, Sophie McBain, is listed as a "freelance writer" for Guardian, Times and New Statesman. I am glad she's kept her free mind.

With age, almost all humans deal with decline in memory and other #brain functions. But the minds of some people in their 80s and beyond function as though they were decades younger. Scientists have been studying these superagers for 25 years, testing their memory skills and autopsying their brains when they die. Two things stand out: Not all superagers do all the healthy things you might expect, but nearly all of them are highly social. medium.com/wise-well/secrets-o #neuroscience #science

“Study my brain please,”the note said.

Duerson, Seau & Bramwell were found to have #CTE, which can be diagnosed only posthumously.

It will take weeks, or possibly months, to determine if the gunman had CTE, acc/to neuropathology experts.

Chris Nowinski, a fmr pro wrestler & Harvard #football player who for years has been pushing #sports leagues to acknowledge the link between the #brain disease & #concussions, said a CTE diagnosis requires the…study of 20 different regions of the brain.

The shooter in Midtown Manhattan on Monday was the latest former #football player to choose this fate, though only after more carnage. The gunman, #ShaneTamura, shot himself in the chest after killing 4 others. The police said Tamura, who played high school football in California, carried a note that referred to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or #CTE, the degenerative #brain disease that has been linked to repeated blows to the head in contact sports.

“I would like that to be done,” Mr. Bramwell said into the camera in a video shared with The New York Times by his parents. “I want you all to be happy that I’m free and that I can rest easy, because my life for the past four years has been a living hell inside of my head. I love you. And goodbye.”

Dave Duerson, the #ChicagoBears great, took his life that way in 2011, & Junior Seau, a Hall of Fame linebacker, did the same a year later. Even a teenager in Missouri, Wyatt Bramwell, killed himself that way in 2019, after recording a sober farewell to his family. He requested that his father donate his #brain to researchers.

The Familiar Suicide & Final Wish of the NYC Gunman

#ShaneTamura is not the first former #football player to shoot himself in the chest & request that his #brain be examined.

The scenario has become grimly familiar to football fans: A former player experiencing cognitive issues kills himself with a gunshot to his chest, rather than his head, to allow for his brain to be examined for the disease linked to repeated blows sustained on the field.

A neuropathologist will study slices of Shane Tamura’s brain to determine if he had C.T.E. Above, Dr. Ann McKee of Boston University presenting her findings in 2017 from her examination of another former football player, Aaron Hernandez of the New England Patriots.

You might've heard adults can't grow new neurons. Or you might've heard we can. Such has been the state of science on this question. New research offers some of the most solid evidence yet that neurogenesis occurs in adult humans, but to what extent we still don't know. Further research could lead to treatments for dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Have you ever had food poisoning and subsequently been unable to eat whatever caused it? A team of neuroscientists studying mice have found the exact “memory hub” in their brain that is responsible for this reaction. Our @ScienceDesk shared the story from @PopularScience.

I ask periodically but haven't found an answer yet. My partner has dyslexia, and I definitely don't have that (I can easily help her spell any word she asks), but I when typing I transpose S/2/5, 1/L and of course 0/O. I also substitute words like suitcase/briefcase. I also reverse the order of letters. When reading, numbers in particular, the digits seem to shift around, and if a digit is repeated I struggle to count how many times it is repeated. Is there a name for this? #actuallyAutistic #dyslexia #brain #neuroscience
