Repairing a (hackable) Nintendo Switch this weekend, the USB-C port is no longer working and I got a replacement. This is tiny stuff. Heat gun only.
.... and failed. I heated it just that little bit too much. The console still starts ok, but the USB-C prong does not go all the way in, likely because some platic in the middle melted / deformed. :-( i'll have to try again... this is tricky!
@emanuel Oh wow, yeah. So you are thinking solder paste and a heat gun? I’m lucky I have a heat gun that can be configured digitally to a set temp. I bought it many years ago and it has turned out to be a useful tool. Although one of those hot air rework stations is way more convenient…I use what I have.
@markkrueg yes I am really scared to try it with the heat gun but removal worked OK so I’m hopeful this also works for re-ordering. The biggest problem is that you cannot visually inspect it because the solder joints are under the USB port.
@emanuel I was wondering about that. Maybe it would make sense to do a test run where you time how long it takes the paste to liquify without the part in place. Then remove the solder with a wick and do the final run with a timer. I’m probably overthinking though, as you may be able to see it seat itself as the paste liquifies. I bought a nozzle for my heat gun that snaps over the end and has a smaller opening, and that has helped with precision.
@markkrueg The big issue here is that the USB-C port of the Nintendo Switch is soldered in a way where all the pads are obscured by the actual component. So I guess the next time I will try I will heat it from below not above.
